Silicon dioxide is a compound containing only two elements, oxygen and silicon. Its chemical formula is SiO2, commonly known as silica. It is the most common and stable compound of silicon. It is widely distributed in nature and constitutes various minerals and rocks. Silica exists in two states, crystalline and amorphous. The most important crystalline silica is quartz. Pure quartz is colorless, and common sand is silica mixed with impurities. There is also amorphous silicon in nature, called diatomaceous earth, which is often used as an adsorbent for glycerine explosives (nitroglycerin). The hardness of crystalline silicon dioxide is very high, such as quartz Mohs hardness of 7; amorphous silicon has a lower hardness, among which the harder opal is 5.5 to 6.5.

The chemical properties of silicon dioxide are very stable. It is insoluble in water and general acid, but it can react with hydrofluoric acid to generate silicon tetrafluoride gas. When silicon dioxide and strong alkali or carbonates of certain metals are eutectic at high temperature, silicate will be generated. It is melted at high temperature and then the melt is cooled. As the temperature decreases, the melt becomes more and more viscous and finally hardens to obtain quartz glass. Containers made of quartz glass are not easy to break even when they are suddenly cooled or heated. Quartz glass can also transmit ultraviolet rays. Therefore, quartz glass is used to make mercury vapor ultraviolet lamps and some optical instruments and high-temperature instruments that use ultraviolet rays. Diatomaceous earth is used as a heat-insulating and sound-proof material. Ordinary sand is a raw material for making glass, ceramics, cement and refractory materials.
